Google’s earnings growth may speed bump soon

December 18th, 2006 by webmaster

Internet search company Google Inc.’s (GOOG.O: Quote) earnings growth, which for the most part has been smooth and spectacular until now, may soon hit a speed bump, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Interest income — the money the Internet search engine makes by parking its more than $10 billion cash hoard in interest-bearing investments like government securities — isn’t likely to grow at the same rate as last year.

Interest income jumped beginning in last year’s fourth quarter after Google’s cash stockpile grew when the company raised billions of dollars in two major stock offerings.

Google launches Google Patent Search

December 14th, 2006 by webmaster

Google has launched a new search engine for finding U.S. patents - Google Patent Search. New search tools allows you to search the database of the US Patent Office.

The beta of Google Patent Search lets you look through the full text of the US patent corpus to find what interests you.

Doug Banks writes in the Google blog: “Google Patent Search uses much of the same technology that powers Google Book Search, so you can scroll through pages and zoom in on text and illustrations just like you can with books”.

Advanced search feature in Google Patent Search lets users search by criteria like patent number, inventor and filing date.

Google testing maps under Search Results

December 13th, 2006 by webmaster

Google testing out placing a link to Google maps results directly below the search result’s description and above the url of that result.

Google often tries different UI experiments to test out new ways to help users. This is one of those tests. Personally, I think it’s neat to be able to get a map right there from the search results”, says Matt Cuts.

Experts thinking that map link is perhaps shown for those websites associated with business listings in Google Maps, but Google doesn’t comment this.

Google Desktop, your little Google server

December 10th, 2006 by webmaster

The Google Desktop is your own private little Google server. It sits in the background, slogging through your files and folders, indexing your incoming and outgoing email messages, listening in on your instant messenger chats, and browsing the Web right along with you.

The download of the program is fast, and even the indexing of the personal files and e-mails took about an hour. When you first install Google Desktop, it makes use of any idle time to meander your filesystem, email application, instant messages, and browser cache. Google then seems to classify all new entries thereafter so it needs no updating. Read the rest of this entry »
